My wife and I have recently moved to Colorado, USA from
the United Kingdom to establish a residential training center
for athletes of all abilities to train and live at altitude.
Anyone who has been at altitude will know that the decrease
in available oxygen creates a major challenge to the body's
energy supply systems. I was immediately interested in ACT
as it provides vital support and supplementation at a cellular
level in a form that is healthy for the body.
I have tried a number of energy drinks over the years, all
of which have come with a number of issues for me. I don't
drink caffeine so a large hit of caffeine makes me feel
"wired" and high sugar contents and various artificial
sweeteners and flavorings led to energy peaks and troughs
and stomach cramps and often nausea - not a great combination
for training!

| I was
keen to try ACT and to notice what effect it had for me. Some
of my friends and ex work mates have ribbed me about treating
my body as a "temple" - it does enable me to notice
the impact of even small changes in nutritional or fluid intake,
and to be aware of what has caused the resultant change in
the way my body reacts. For my next training run I drank half
a pack of ACT mixed with 500ml of water about 20 minutes before
I went out. The first thing I noticed was that I really liked
the taste which is a something that definitely hasn't been
true of other energy drinks I have tried - I have often ended
up mixing a "cocktail" to drown the taste! I also
noticed before I started to run that my focus, which is usually
pretty sharp anyway, was even sharper! I set off on my run
eager to see what else would take place! I immediately felt
that I had bags of energy! I was scheduled for an easy run
so ended up holding back the whole way round!
I was surprised to discover when I had finished that I
had run the route 30 seconds faster than I normally do,
and had been holding back too. The next run I did was a
tougher one over trails that started at 8,500 feet and climb
to > 9,000 feet. Again I found I had bags of energy and
set another best time for that route too! Since then I have
been taking ACT every day, half a packet in the morning
and half a packet after lunch. My running is going great
- the energy that ACT releases in my body has resulted in
me making significant gains in both endurance and speed.
I unfortunately turned an ankle heavily on a trail run a
few weeks ago so had not been able to run for nearly 2 weeks
while the swelling went down! I had entered my first ever
trail run at altitude - the ankle injury meant I decided
to take it easy and just get round. I finished 7th in my
age group which I was very pleased with under the circumstances.
Last weekend I raced in a shorter race and finished 3rd
in my age group, only 11 seconds behind the age group winner.
Again I was very pleased as I am racing against people who
have been living and racing at altitude for years, I have
just arrived!
ACT gives me the ability to dig that bit deeper when I
need to and also recover more quickly after training and
racing. A further benefit of ACT is the ratio of sodium
to potassium. All energy drinks that I have seen and tried
are relatively higher in sodium and lower in potassium.
Generally most people have adequate levels of sodium in
their diet so there is no requirement to supplement. This
is interesting as potassium is the chief intracellular mineral.
Potassium concentration in cells is required to achieve
a well regulated exchange of nutrients and waste products
between the cells and their external fluid environment.
It also plays a key role in maintaining electrical gradients
across cell membranes that is vital for the transmission
of nerve impulses and effective muscle stimulation. ACT
therefore provides a key ingredient to enable efficient
metabolism and energy delivery at a cellular level.
I am so excited about ACT and talk to anyone who is prepared
to listen. Just about everyone can benefit from ACT - the
potential market is huge and I am also excited at now being
involved in the energy drinks business and helping others
to establish another income stream!
